RICHMOND — Virginia has reached a wide-ranging settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice over its system for treating the intellectually and developmentally disabled, forestalling a federal lawsuit on charges the state needlessly institutionalized many people instead of placing them in community-based care.

Romney leads pack in Florida

Posted in: World Net Daily | Comments (0)

(SUNSHINE STATE NEWS) — With the Presidential Preference Primary looming on Tuesday, Mitt Romney holds a solid lead over the Republican presidential pack in Florida, according to a Sunshine State News Poll of likely primary voters.

Romney tops the poll, which was conducted by Harrisburg, Pa.-based Voter Survey Service (VSS), with 40 percent. When he ran in the 2008 presidential primary, Romney placed second in Florida, taking 31 percent and winning 18 of the 67 counties in the Sunshine State. Newt Gingrich places second with 31 percent. Rick Santorum takes third with 12 percent followed by Ron Paul with 9 percent. One percent of those surveyed back other candidates while 6 percent remain undecided.

Iranian ayatollah: We’re already nuclear

(ISRAEL NATIONAL NEWS) — Senior Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said on Friday that Iran is already a nuclear state and that Americans have not realized that.

“The United States says it will not allow Iran to be nuclear, but it is so blind that it hasn’t noticed that Iran has already become a nuclear state,” Khatami was quoted by Channel 10 News as having said. He added that the U.S. has become isolated in the region, after its four “slaves” were removed from power. He was referring to former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, former Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi, former Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali and former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Gingrich ‘shocked at Romney’s ‘dishonest’ performance

Posted in: World Net Daily | Comments (0)

(WASHINGTON POST) MIAMI — Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said Friday that the reason he seemed less combative during Thursday’s televised debate was that he was shocked by what he described as rival Mitt Romney’s “totally dishonest” replies to several questions.

In a telephone interview, Gingrich cited Romney’s remarks on immigration, his vote for Democrat Paul Tsongas in 1992 and whether he knew about an ad his campaign is running against Gingrich.

“I think it’s the most blatantly dishonest performance by a presidential candidate I’ve ever seen,” Gingrich said. At several moments during the debate, Gingrich simply leaned away from his lectern and looked down at his feet because he was so stunned by some of Romney’s statements, he said. He didn’t engage Romney at the time, he said, because “I wanted to fact check. I wanted to make sure he was as totally dishonest as I thought he was.”

(WALL STREET JOURNAL) — While Rick Santorum is in Florida seeking to revive his presidential campaign, a man in Wyoming might hold the key to extending his candidacy, and the entire fight for the Republican nomination.

Foster Friess is the largest financial backer of the political entity running an independent campaign to boost Mr. Santorum in the GOP race. Mr. Friess said this week he isn’t likely to help Mr. Santorum ahead of Tuesday’s Florida primary, because it’s “not realistic” that the former Pennsylvania senator can prevail in the winner-take-all contest.

But Mr. Friess, 71 years old, said he plans to fund television advertisements for Mr. Santorum in other states in February and March.

Charlie Rose: Obama Campaign ‘So Giddy That They Want to Run Naked’

Posted in: News Busted | Comments (0)

2012 01 27 CBS RoseCap Charlie Rose: Obama Campaign So Giddy That They Want to Run Naked

Charlie Rose boosted a jaw-dropping line from Politico's Roger Simon on Friday's CBS This Morning, which concluded that the Republican presidential debates were hurting the party's chances at defeating President Obama: "It is said that in Chicago, where they are running the Obama campaign, that they're so giddy that they want to run naked in Millennium Park" [audio available here; video below the jump].

Simon's actual sentence in his Thursday piece was more graphic:

These debates are making the Obama staffers in Chicago so giddy that after each one they are tearing off their clothes, running through Millennium Park and howling at the moon. And why shouldn't they? The American people, after being treated to hour upon hour of Republican candidates…are slowly discovering something: Barack Obama doesn't look that bad any more.

The CBS anchor made his paraphrase of the Politico writer's line in a remark to correspondent Norah O'Donnell. The head-turning remark from Rose prompted co-anchor Gayle King to laugh off-camera and reply, "That's a visual." O'Donnell also laughed, and stated that "they don't want to interfere with these debates. They think the more the American people watch these debates, they get a better understanding of their opponents, the Republicans. This president is trying to stay above the fray at this point."

Rose has certainly revealed his liberal leanings since he began his stint on the new CBS morning show. The previous morning, he took issue with Florida Senator Marco Rubio for attacking the President's State of the Union address. The journalist replied, "I saw him honoring the military of America and a lot other things where we should be coming together. That doesn't seem to be divisive."

On January 17, the anchor threw the race card at Newt Gingrich, hinting that the former House Speaker should apologize for a supposedly insensitive comment about food stamps. Two days later, Rose trumpeted a line from the front page of the New York Times about "Romney richesbeing seen as new hurdle."

The transcript of the relevant portion of the segment on Friday's CBS This Morning, which began at the top of the 8 am Eastern hour:

2012 01 27 CBS CTM Rose Charlie Rose: Obama Campaign So Giddy That They Want to Run NakedCHARLIE ROSE: Norah, it is said that in Chicago, where they are running the Obama campaign, that they're so giddy that they want to run naked in Millennium Park-

    GAYLE KING (off-camera): (laughs) That's a visual, that's a visual-

    NORAH O'DONNELL: (laughs) Yeah-

ROSE: I think Roger Simon said that or some- (laughs)

O'DONNELL: They don't want to interfere- yeah, they don't want to interfere with these debates. They think the more the American people watch these debates, they get a better understanding of their opponents, the Republicans. This president is trying to stay above the fray at this point.

GOP Voters Grading Gingrich Ethics On a Curve

Posted in: News Busted | Comments (0)

Newt Gingrich has surged to the lead in the race for the Republican presidential nomination with the strong support of evangelical Christian voters. To some, given Gingrich's personal life, this support is puzzling. Whatever else people say about Mitt Romney, his personal life seems above reproach and a good role model for others.

But Gingrich benefits from the fact that when it comes to ethics, voters always grade politicians on a curve. Among Republican primary voters nationwide, 68 percent believe the former House speaker's ethical standards are at least as good as those of most other politicians. Even 51 percent of Romney supporters and 74 percent of Rick Santorum's voters view the ethics of Gingrich as the norm for his peers.

This says more about the public view of politicians than it does about Gingrich. When it comes to character, Gingrich places fourth out of four among the Republican contenders in the eyes of GOP primary voters. Only 9 percent believes he has the best personal character of the group. But in a world where 52 percent of voters believe it's likely their own representative in Congress trades votes for cash, the personal baggage carried by Gingrich is seen as the unfortunate norm rather than a disqualifying offense.

Ironically, Rasmussen polling first identified how steep a curve is used to judge political ethics at the time Gingrich was trying to drag down President Bill Clinton on personal transgressions. In that case, and in just about every other political scandal since, most voters tend to believe that the politician in question is just doing what politicians do. It's a part of the political culture that voters would desperately like to see changed.

While being graded on a curve helped Gingrich pass the ethics test, his lead in the polls comes because many Republicans now see him as the strongest general election candidate against President Obama. That's a shocking development in a campaign where Team Romney always trumpeted electability as their strongest argument. Polls going back for more than a year have consistently shown Romney performing better than Gingrich or anyone else against the president. And make no mistake about it, electability is far and away the most important quality Republican voters are looking for in a candidate.

Now, however, 39 percent of GOP primary voters nationally see Gingrich as the strongest candidate, while just 37 percent still say it of Romney. The former Massachusetts governor may look like the better candidate on paper, but many Republicans have watched Gingrich's debate performances and concluded that he will be more effective on the campaign trail. Whether or not that's an accurate perception, Gingrich's surge in the polls will last as long as a sizable number of Republicans believes it to be true.

The roller-coaster nature of the Republican race stems from the fact that none of the candidates has closed the sale when it comes to convincing voters they can win in November. Perhaps tired of waiting, 33 percent of GOP voters now feel it would be good for a new candidate to jump into the presidential race.

Schools of Education are the ‘Academic Slums’ of America’s Colleges and Universities

Posted in: News Busted | Comments (0)

Larry Sand's article "No Wonder Johnny (Still) Can't Read" — written for The John William Pope Center for Higher Education Policy, based in Raleigh, N.C. — blames schools of education for the decline in America's education. Education professors drum into students that they should not "drill and kill" or be the "sage on the stage" but instead be the "guide on the side" who "facilitates student discovery." This kind of harebrained thinking, coupled with multicultural nonsense, explains today's education. During his teacher education, Sand says, "teachers-to-be were forced to learn about this ethnic group, that impoverished group, this sexually anomalous group, that under-represented group, etc. — all under the rubric of 'Culturally Responsive Education.'"

Education majors are woefully lacking in academic skills. Here are some sample test questions for you to answer. Question 1: Which of the following is equal to a quarter-million? a) 40,000, b) 250,000, c) 2,500,000, d) 1/4,000,000 or e) 4/1,000,000. Question 2: Martin Luther King Jr. (insert the correct choice) for the poor of all races. a) spoke out passionately, b) spoke out passionate, c) did spoke out passionately, d) has spoke out passionately or e) had spoken out passionate. Question 3: What would you do if your student sprained an ankle? a) Put a Band-Aid on it, b) Ice it or c) Rinse it with water.

Guess whether these questions were on a sixth-grade, ninth-grade or 12th-grade test. I bet the average reader would guess that it's a sixth-grade test. Wrong. How about ninth-grade? Wrong again. You say, "OK, Williams, so they're 12th-grade test questions!" Still wrong. According to a Heartland Institute-published School Reform News (September 2001) article titled "Who Tells Teachers They Can Teach?", those test questions came from prospective teacher tests. The first two questions are samples from the Praxis I test for teachers, and the third is from the 1999 teacher certification test in Illinois. According to the Chicago Sun-Times (9/6/01), 5,243 Illinois teachers failed their teacher certification tests. The Chicago Sun-Times also reported, "One teacher failed 24 of 25 teacher tests — including 11 of 12 Basic Skills tests and all 12 tests on teaching learning-disabled children." Yet that teacher was assigned to teach learning-disabled children in Chicago. Departments of education have solved the problem of teacher test failure. According to a New York Post story (11/14/11) titled "City teacher tests turn into E-ZPass," more than 99 percent of teachers pass.

Textbooks used in schools of education advocate sheer nonsense. A passage in Enid Lee et al.'s "Beyond Heroes and Holidays" reads: "We cannot afford to become so bogged down in grammar and spelling that we forget the whole story. … The onslaught of antihuman practices that this nation and other nations are facing today: racism, and sexism, and the greed for money and human labor that disguises itself as 'globalization.'" Marilyn Burns' text "About Teaching Mathematics" reads, "There is no place for requiring students to practice tedious calculations that are more efficiently and accurately done by using calculators." "New Designs for Teaching and Learning," by Dennis Adams and Mary Hamm, says: "Content knowledge is not seen to be as important as possessing teaching skills and knowledge about the students being taught. … Successful teachers understand the outside context of community, personal abilities, and feelings, while they establish an inside context or environment conducive to learning." That means it's no problem if a teacher can't figure out that a quarter-million is the same as 250,000. Harvey Daniels and Marilyn Bizar's text "Methods that Matter" reads, "Students can no longer be viewed as cognitive living rooms into which the furniture of knowledge is moved in and arranged by teachers, and teachers cannot invariably act as subject-matter experts." The authors add, "The main use of standardized tests in America is to justify the distribution of certain goodies to certain people."

Schools of education represent the academic slums of most any college. American education can benefit from slum removal.

Chris Matthews Bashes Jan Brewer With Bad November Poll, Ignores Good One From Wednesday

Posted in: News Busted | Comments (0)

Matthews 127 Chris Matthews Bashes Jan Brewer With Bad November Poll, Ignores Good One From Wednesday

MSNBC's Chris Matthews is so hell-bent on trashing Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer after her dust-up with President Obama that on Friday's Hardball he dragged out a poll from November showing a high disapproval of her in her state.

I guess Matthews – who just Tuesday revealed that he had never heard of Congressional insider trading until the President mentioned it during the State of the Union address – missed a poll released two days ago showing high favorability numbers for Brewer (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS: And now for a fact-check. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer drew some scrutiny for the tense encounter she had with President Obama when the President arrived in Arizona. Well, Republican Congressman Trent Franks of Arizona came on Hardball last night and had this to say about Brewer’s record and popularity in his own state.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CONGRESSMAN TRENT FRANKS (R-ARIZONA): She came in the same time Barack Obama did. The state of Arizona was among the worst hit by the housing crisis. We were 47th in job creation. She’s balanced the budget. She’s universally loved in Arizona.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

Matthews 127 Chris Matthews Bashes Jan Brewer With Bad November Poll, Ignores Good One From WednesdayMATTHEWS: Well, universally loved? Really? Where does Brewer’s approval stand in Arizona? Well, in this November’s PPP poll, 49 percent disproved of Brewer’s performance, 42 percent approves. So, to quote the song, when it comes to the Arizona governor, love is not all around her.

First of all, it is universally accepted that PPP is a liberal polling group.

Far more important, a new poll released Wednesday by Behavior Research Center of Arizona told a completely different story as reported by the Arizona Republic:

Arizonans like their governor and state Legislature, according to a new poll by Behavior Research Center of Arizona. [...]

Pollsters interviewed 553 registered Arizona voters via phone Jan. 5-9. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points. Voters were asked to rate the job performance of Gov. Jan Brewer and the Legislature.

When asked about Brewer's job performance, 37 percent indicated it was excellent/good, 30 percent said fair and 29 percent said poor/very poor.

That means that 67 percent in this poll approved of Brewer's job performance.

No wonder Matthews opted to report the liberal one from November and totally ignore this one.

    Tell the Truth, Mr. Matthews.

Associate Editor’s note: As you are likely aware, since the financial collapse of 2008, charities and non-profit organizations have seen a sharp reduction in donations. Although the environment has improved, contributions are still nowhere near where they were prior to the recession. Unfortunately, the Media Research Center has not been immune. With this in mind, your support has become more important than ever. With a critical election approaching, the liberal media needs to be monitored 24/7. As we have been predicting for months, the press are willing to do anything to get their beloved politicians elected and/or reelected. As such, we need your help to fight this fight. Any contribution, even $10, is greatly appreciated. Please consider a tax-deductible gift to the Media Research Center to help us battle the liberal media. Thank you.
